Message	These are notorious for going bad. I had an over heating problem too. I replaced everything and even replaced my fan clutch with another used one. Then the legend Greg Dupree convinced me to get a new fan clutch. Amazingly it solved the problem. Your hesitation problems and backfire sound like another issue. I agree with Zinister that your timing may be off. Since you got a used motor it may be a good idea to pull the timing covers and make sure the timing belt didn't slip.
